It’s Great to Be Back!
Missing last month with The Fab 40s was a bummer, but the right thing for family & myself.
Coming back is much like the way you feel when you return to college or school after the long summer. It’s great to see old friends you’ve missed all summer, catch up on what they have been doing & get back into a routine. There’s a buzz in the air, there’s so much activity & everyone is bustling around… like squirrels collecting nuts to prepare for the long winter. It’s just busy, busy, busy. That’s why Preppy styling was a great choice for October. It coincides perfectly with the familiar routine of students heading back to universities & their Ivy League campuses in the fall.
Obviously, I have a childhood viewpoint with preppy styling, but I was also very curious of how did it originate. On a personal level, dressing preppy meant you were the cool, popular kid in school. You lived on the West side of town, you owned a Polo shirt in every color, you golfed at the country club, your parents most likely bought you a car for your 16th birthday, basically in a nutshell, your parents had money. I didn’t dislike them, fault them…. envied? Yes! But, I also knew they had no control of who their parents were. But for some reason, why did we all want to be a part of that group?
Historically, preppy style was way more about behavior versus clothing. Affluent parents would send their children to prep school in hopes to increase their chance of getting into a prestigious university. It was about social achievement, tradition, class, which in turn, created this culture of “exclusivity & conformity”. I will take it a step further; “the snobby and entitled culture”. Several brands strategically placed stores on or near campuses to capitalize financially, but also help shape & define the uniform of preppy styling.
Today, this type of styling is available to the masses. Now, it is more about the clothing versus the behavioral lifestyle that is associated with the preppy culture. To achieve a modern take over traditional, choose one preppy piece instead of a head-to-toe look.
Yep, it was a windy day!
It’s time to check out the Fab 40s & their modern spin on preppy!
Michelle of http://www.retrochicmama.com
Michelle is our guest blogger for the month! She is a real beauty & I absolutely love her style! Her looks are so super chic, clean & sophisticated with her own little twists with each outfit. Now, this is how you wear white after Labor Day, what a crisp option! Wide-legged trousers are chic, stylish & super comfy. Pairing her look with a fun graphic tee creates a fabulous day look & just so cool! She has shown how to make a blazer less business. I will be stealing this idea for sure!

Ann was our Theme Leader this month & invited the lovely Michelle of Retro Chic Mama to join. This is preppy done right! Ann can be my teacher every school semester! Ann also shows how to make a blazer less business-like; something I love & will try! Her plaid pants are so fun & the zipper detail adds a little edge. Another fun graphic tee creates a casual, yet effortlessly stylish look. Her penny loafers completely perfect the outfit!

Samantha of http://www.fakefabulous.com
Purple, rich blue & cognac is a gorgeous color combination! Love the preppy print & collar, but the small ruffle detail & cold-shoulder of Samantha’s shirt sends this right into 2016; love the juxtaposition of classic preppy & modern. We definitely share the same taste in shoes! Her menswear-inspired brogues are so adorable. Such a sweet, modern take on preppy; this is a look I could wear every day!!!

Veronica of http://www.cidstylefile.com
I would never think to pair the blue/teal shirt with red jeans, but Veronica pulls all of these amazing fall colors & prints together so nicely! Her look is so comfy & ideal choice for the transitional weather we have this time of year. The coolest part of her look is she builds on a traditional plaid button-down, but incorporates faux fur, leopard print for a more modern, edgy, cool take on preppy.

Jennie of http://www.apocketfulofpolkadots.com
This is a perfect example of how to layer & utilize the classic hue of navy that suits the preppy aesthetic perfectly. The striped tee & gingham button down are great building blocks for this outfit; mixing prints is so fresh & modern. The cuffs folded out over the blazer makes this look distinctive & knee-high boots finishes this chic, sophisticated look. She is so fearing adorable!

Sheela has the best take on any style challenge you throw her way! Blair Waldorf, you best watch out, I think someone is going to take your place in the lead role for “Best Dressed” & looking beautiful in black. I’m all about the special details in her heels, exaggerated cuff & bow tie. Her blouse, bow tie & jacket are sweet & romantic, then VAVOOM! The distressed jeans & killer heels take this look to another level. Sheela rocks everything!

If I didn’t know her, I would swear she just walked off the set of Tommy Hilfiger after shooting the Fall ad Campaign! This look is so youthful & playful. The stripes in her dress & sweater swung over her shoulders are so classic, but she makes this look her own by adding fun printed socks & booties.
