A definitive YES! I googled, “how many fashion bloggers are there?” Well, in 2011, there were over 173 million blogs & most of them were fashion blogs. That is mind-boggling!
I remember when movie stars started to take the place of the “super model”. They were sneaking onto the front cover of magazines & were slowly becoming muses for major brand ad campaigns.
Is that what happened with the world of fashion blogging? The fashion blogger is taking place of today’s model, just like the movie star took place of super model! Let’s look at the biggest bloggers out there. They are young, tall, thin, gorgeous, but brands don’t have to go through the hassle or pay the price to book a professional model, stylist, studio & photographer. They are collaborating with a modelesque-type minus the price tag, but the bloggers have the social media following. Hmmmm, interesting…..
Yes, fashion bloggers, style influencers, lifestyle bloggers & digital influencers, whatever you want to call them today, can be a powerful asset to a brand. I can see why brands look to bloggers to help them to gain followers & likes & reach consumers. It allows the brand to reach a certain niche audience, but also reach a new audience.
But, I pose the question: Have we lost our way with what blogging is all about?
I researched the basic definition of blogging & here is what I found: “A blog is a frequently updated online personal journal or diary. It is a place to express yourself to the world. A place where you can share your thoughts and your passions. Really, it’s anything you want it to be. For our purposes we’ll say that a blog is your own website that you are going to update on an ongoing basis.” “A collection of posts – deeply personal – fresh – off the cuff.” Holy ba Goly, blogging has changed since its humble beginnings.
I can’t even count the number of articles & webinars to join that land in my inbox, telling me another set of new tips on “How to Be a Better Blogger”. Not only do you have to have perfectly clear, airbrushed magazine quality photos, you have to have a professional grade camera including professional photographer. You have to find the perfect backdrop like that super cool alley in Soho, NYC or the pristine empty beach in the Maldives. You have to post regularly or daily. You have to have to hire a web builder/graphic designer to create a powerful, fast website that loads within a millisecond & is mobile-friendly. Whew! Now, fashion/style bloggers must endure the expense of Fashion Weeks around the world, design a collection with a brand or have their own line of clothing, shoes or accessories to be legit. I just saw a post on IG with bloggers walking in a major fashion show! Whoa, this is unbelievable!
I like telling my personal stories or things that are on my mind while simultaneously posting my looks, but I never meant for it to become a game of likes, comments, stats & popularity to impress who… myself? I’m also driven to blogs with interesting, thoughtful content; blogs that pose meaningful questions with a little dash of humor. Don’t get me wrong, I certainly enjoy the style inspiration, but I need more than just pretty clothes to keep me captivated. So, I will continue to shoot with my non-professional photographer hubby. We will continue to share a few blurry, out-of-focus photos, but the content will be clear & real. I hope you will do the same; keep the well-thought out content coming!
I like the concept of reading someone’s blog much like reading someone’s book. You have the extra time to relax, just read & feel inspired.
Let’s remember the ORIGINAL, TRUE DEFINITION OF BLOGGING!
It is all about buying one piece to utilize with many looks & this cropped tee goes with a ton of jumpsuits, jeans & skirts as I’ve shown in a previous post. The color is so fresh & perfect for spring. This time around I pulled a look together with my Forever 21 midi skirt that I’ve had for about a year & Zara sneakers & bag. These blush pink tennies are probably a closet fav & pair perfectly with tons of looks as well.
Not sure why the print in my skirt looks so psychodelic in this photo. In fact, zero editing on any photos whatsoever, just me & hubby doing the best we can with all the little buttons & gizmos on the camera. We actually have no idea what half the buttons do, but we have such fun together!!!
