You can find inspiration all around you, but as a 40+ fashion blogger the least expected place would be a Disney character, but these characters teach so many valuable life lessons. Not only can you draw great inspiration on how to live your life, but you can also find fashion inspiration from your favorite Disney character. Not only Disney characters, but also many characters depicted on tv & in the movies.
I’m not familiar with many Disney movies let alone seen many. I have seen Beauty & the Beast, Finding Nemo & The Lion King. I could think of a ton of fashion ideas from these movies, but did they fully inspire me? No, but I had no trouble thinking of the first character on tv who I related to on so many levels. That’s whom I decided for my muse.
Does anyone remember Jo from The Facts of Life? She came barreling into the prestigious Eastland Academy boarding school on a motorcycle!
- She was a rebel
- She didn’t come from money
- She walked to the beat of her own drum
- She didn’t like rules
- She was tough-talking & strong-willed
- Most of all, she was a tomboy
Jo had her fairytale moment when Eddie, her sailor boyfriend, convinced her to elope, so they could get married at an earlier age. But, through the help of Mrs. Garrett, Blair & her own self-reflection, she realized the hardship of marrying at such a young age. There were so many lessons learned during that episode. You don’t need a man for your own happiness. You realize who your real friends are at the most crucial times in life. Learning to walk away from something meaningful is tough, but the right thing to do. You know the lyrics, “You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both & there you have, The Facts of Life, The Facts of Life!”
When looking at images of Jo’s styling throughout the show, she was a no-frills kind of gal. There were lots of baseball tees, jeans, her leather biker jacket. But I was drawn to a particular photo of her in this baggy camo jacket (sure this was given to her by her man, Eddie) & many photos of her wearing a jean jacket. So the inspiration was easy, but of course, I had to put my little spin on things by adding a skirt (a nod to the school uniform) & my signature tennies (a nod to me).

We have 7 more fairytale endings!
Each character chosen possesses the perfect point of departure (as Tim Gunn would say) for the looks shared today. As each of us reveled our photo, we also spent a great deal of time in explaining why we chose our inspirational character & how we interpreted their inspiration through fashion.
Let’s take a look!
Shelbee of http://www.shelbeeontheedge.com
So excited & happy that Shelbee, our Guest Blogger, joined us this month. Her outfit was inspired by Merida because she is so bad ass! She chose the a dark green plaid to honor Merida’s heritage & Shelbee’s heels just creamed Merida. She also found the perfect black fur bag to honor Merida’s mother & brothers whom she turned into black bears. These amazing arrow earrings represent Merida as a skilled archer & this necklace represents a target. The gold corset is a little reveling & definitely rebellious like Merida. Amazing look & sexy style inspiration from Shelbee!

Sheela of www.sheelagoh.com
Sheela is our Theme Host for this month. In looking up the description of Belle, these words not only describe her, but our very own Sheela. “Her looks have got no parallel…. She’s nothing like the rest of us …..” Sheela possesses an undeniable beauty, is intelligent, has vast vocabulary & incredible imagination like Belle & she wants to live a life full of adventure. If Belle wanted to add a little edge to her style, yet still look elegant, this is exactly what she would wear!

Jennie of http://www.apocketfulofpolkadots.com
I would have never guessed this was a DIY project as the dye job is flawless on Jennie’s tank & maxi skirt. She nailed Ariel’s distinctive appearance from her fiery red hair to her green crochet maxi skirt. As Ariel explores her surroundings along with the human world, Jennie is also exploring color & taking adventurous steps to create this whimsical, beachy look including the perfect crown of flowers. She has given Ariel a run for her money, this the epitome of a Sea Goddess!

Veronica of http://www.cidstylefile.com
Veronica is a vision in white & if Pocahontas were to marry today, I think this would be her stunning look. She looks ethereal, magical & dreamy in her flowy lace dress. The turquoise ring, dream catcher necklace & bracelets capture the Pocahontas, Native American vibe perfectly. You are just dreamy & oh so gorgeous Veronica! Does anyone feel like they have the urge to go to Coachella after laying eyes on this look?

Samantha of http://www.fakefabulous.com
Elsa is all about girl power & Samantha has that in spades! Samatha is “truly, all-encompassingly free” & that is a very rare, amazing quality. We should take a page from Samantha’s book when it comes to not letting the “chains of social conditioning” hold you back. Samantha doesn’t hold back with her unique styling & fun with layering, textures & color. She has created such a cool, one-of-a-kind look with her printed stockings, bold blue jacket & loafers. This is how you take sequins from night to day & this is something I would wear TODAY!

I love the touching story behind Mary’s inspiration. It was wonderful to learn Mary is Native American & her Granny was the true inspiration for her choice. If Pocahontas were human today, this would be her styling. Layering dresses over jeans & pants is so on trend & creates such a chic silhouette. I love that Mary kept with Native American details in her necklace, fringe on her bag & iKat print in her dress. This is such a fabulous look!
