I thought I could only relate to the person who chooses to do the right thing, be the hero & the one who saves the day. How could I ever relate to someone who is just plain bad? Why would I even try to relate to someone who is mean & evil; that’s not who I am!
Isn’t a villain just bad, right? How am I going to pick my villain for this month’s theme? How was I going to think of a villain I RELATED TO?
This really got me to thinking……
Do you think there is a little villain in all of us? Do I have a little villain in me? Ohhhh yes! Absolutely! Even you “goody two shoes” out there, there is a little wicked buried deep. We all have past experiences that influence the way we behave as adults. So that has to be true for villains, right?
Villains have to have more than just the fact they are bad. Meaning, they have to be a villain for a reason. What is the backstory? What is the deep-rooted reason for their behavior? Why they are so bitter, angry, so enraged that they want others to feel as miserable as they do? They didn’t just wake up one day & say, I want to torment others, ruin peoples’ lives or disrupt society.
Villains had something so traumatic happen that sent them into a dark tailspin & they couldn’t control their bitterness, rage or anger. They have not been able to move past the terrible thing(s) that happened & the only way to cope is to attack … retaliate. Can you think of an incident or series of incidences from your past that you could have gone one way or the other in your pattern of behavior later in life? You could have easily chosen to get back at the world for all the awful things that happened to you……
I had to truly understand my villain & their character from the core. There may be a reason for their behavior, I can empathize with their justification, but I still know there is no excuse for their behavior.
Looking at it from another angle… villains are kind of popular. Even if they get under your skin, rile you up; you love when they are on screen or in the news. Come on you couldn’t get enough of OJ, could you? How about the Madoff scandal?
Let’s take it closer to home… how about the mean girl in high school, the bully who picked on the weak kids, the vindictive businessman? They are disrupting life; they are causing so much havoc, but you can’t stop talking about him/her? The worse they are, the more we talk about them.
But, I had to find that one piece of the puzzle that makes a villain, a villain. I needed to discover the tiniest amount of vulnerability buried deep within.
Why I chose Professor Severus Snape?
Despite his calculated, cold demeanor & explosive anger, there were real reasons for his bitterness. Brought up in a dilapidated home in a shabby part of town, he was neglected as a child. Upon meeting Lily at an early, he fell deeply in love with Lily (Harry Potter’s mother), but the love was never reciprocated. With the addition of constant bullying from James Potter (Harry Potter’s father) at Hogwarts, this only intensified the tension & the final blow was when Snape inadvertently called Lily a Mudblood. That was the end of their friendship forever. Even after Lily’s death, his deep strong love for her caused him to join Dumbledore’s side to protect Hogwarts, the students, & most importantly, Lily’s son, Harry from Voldemort & the Death Eaters. Seeinig the sadness & heartache in his face just before death & sharing his memory with Harry through a tear was so moving … ok, I admit I cried.
How I related to my villain:
In his early life, he was insecure, vulnerable, and yearned to be part of something better. As an adult, I related so much to his strong loyal & love for the very few who were close to him. Professor Snape spent many years in constant danger in order to protect Lily’s son & ensure that her sacrifice was not in vain. He was also one of the only wizards in Voldemort’s inner circle who was capable of feeling unconditional love.
How I chose my look:
Professor Snape was dressed in all black with a high collar & super long dramatic sleeves to his outfit, so I tried to mimic that with mine. I chose a jumpsuit & sharp black pumps. This look felt strong & powerful. The glasses was a nod to the intelligence level of Snape. The only red is my lip color that represents Snape’s strong love for Lily.
I wanted to shoot in, near or around a castle-like structure to lend to the mysterious, dark vibe of the theme & my look. Greggy knew of a few old structures made of thick stones in this huge park near his childhood home that would be suitable. Isn’t this backdrop perfect? It was actually raining, so added even more to the shoot! Yes, it was a bit miserable shooting, but, oh so worth it!!!
