Ageless Style Link-up!
We are ageless & we have style!!!
Ten fabulous, over 40 fashionistas take on a theme! The first Tuesday of each month our looks are revealed, & here we are today, showcasing our Flower Power Theme!
Our host for May is none other than the fashionable intellect; Debbie of Fashion Fairy Dust
This month’s theme is Flower Power!
My mind wanders off quite easily when an idea enters my head & this month is no different than previous months when Debbie revealed our theme. My thoughts were: What is the true meaning of “Flower Power”? It’s definitely more than the earthy, hippie subculture that was generalized with drugs, psychedelic music & permissiveness. My next thoughts were stories my mother shared with me about my Uncle Wintrop who fought in the Vietnam War. Even though my mother was instilling a sense of awareness, so I can have a greater appreciation for the sacrifices so many make for our freedom, I still can’t even imagine the atrocities, horrors, physical & psychological damage troops endure & suffer during war.
Many from the late 1960s & early 1970s understand the deep-rooted meaning with the term “Flower Power”. It’s more than just seeing a sea of flowy, wild, vibrant colors decorated with embroidered flowers, loud floral patterns along with women wearing flowers in their hair. Of course, I had to do a little research in hopes I can find a connection that we can relate to today.
The fashion during that time had a real direct relation. Flower Power became the slogan for the non-violent protests/resistance towards the Vietnam War. To create a less-threatening, more peaceful feeling during protests, demonstrators gave flowers to policemen, press, politicians & spectators. They also embraced the symbolism of the movement by dressing in vibrant colors full of floral prints.
How does that relate to us today? The Flower Power theme is perfect for the season. Spring is a time of renewal, regrowth & transformation. Many people couple spring with a feeling of starting new, a reawakening. Everything around us seems to be emerging from slumber, the mood is livelier & the energy is so refreshing.
Maybe we aren’t going to physically hand every stranger on the street a flower, but let’s take the approach of… Lighten up!
Let’s lighten up on how harshly we criticize ourselves in the mirror. Let’s lighten up on how often we describe our flaws; instead, let’s embrace our unique imperfections. Let’s lighten up on the level of expectations we place on ourselves to give 100% to others, but not ourselves. Let’s lighten up & not get so easily agitated or offended by the little things in life… go ahead, let the rude a-hole cut you off in traffic… there are bigger things to focus on in life. Let’s lighten up & not judge others so quickly. Let’s lighten up & get past our egos & know there are other ways to see a certain viewpoint. Let’s lighten up, look out for others in need especially those who we don’t know, live more, love more, respect more.
So, we may not be changing the world, but now that spring is upon us; let’s Lighten up!
So, I typically don’t gravitate towards floral. It is completely out of my realm, but I think you can make almost any style, trend, color, pattern or silhouette work for you & your style aesthetic. I did just that by creating a little more edge with my leather jacket & little nod to my tomboy tendencies with another pair of sneakers from my vast colorful collection.
But I have to admit, I’m so proud of this dress! One, I’ve had it for almost 10 years & it still fits. Two, I was chosen as one of the models for the Grand Opening of the H&M on Newbury Street here in Boston. This was the dress they had me wear. To be the face of such a cool brand was so epic & I still remember how much fun I had, like it was yesterday.
